Risse Greenhouse Unique Soil Mix
Created by Lee Risse in 1983, our 100% locally made soil mix has been a cornerstone of gardening success for Fairbanks residents ever since. Unlike most commercial soils, our mix is designed to provide the best growing environment for Alaskan conditions.

Here’s what sets it apart:
Water Retention
Some commercial mixes rely on bark, wood shavings or mulch to provide the bulk of the soil and make it lighter for shipping, but this type of soil does not hold water very well. Our soil mix holds water much better than bark-based mixes, which is crucial for gardening in the dry hills of Fairbanks.
Available Nutrients
Mulch can also leech nitrogen from your soil as it decomposes. Since our mix doesn't rely on bark or mulch to make up its volume, that also means the nutrients like nitrogen are bioavailable to plants immediately, providing them with everything they need to get started right away.
Locally Produced
By producing our soil mix locally, we reduce transportation costs and minimize our environmental impact, all while giving back to our very own community that we have been a part of for generations.
Complete Transparency
We believe in being completely honest about our ingredients and production process. No secret chemicals here. All ingredients are listed on each bag. If you have questions, just ask!
Steam Sterilization
Our soil is steam-sterilized to kill any weed seeds or pathogens before packaging, ensuring a clean, disease-free start for your plants.
